'A bonny sicht' – Readers share their views after Aberdeen is named one of the best places to live in the UK – Aberdeen Live

One reader said: “We live in a wonderful city far from perfect but it’s ours.”
Last week, Aberdeen Live revealed that the Granite City has been named as one of the best places to live in the UK. Edinburgh topped the chart, followed by Worcestershire in second place and Aberdeen in third.
Resident review site HomeViews carried out the research, asking nearly 30,000 people from across the nation to review the places they lived and used the data to reveal the top locations across the UK and Aberdeen was named in the top 5.
Scoring highly for accessibility, Aberdeen scored 4.63/5 – only a fraction behind Edinburgh’s score of 4.75. One reviewer stated his home, located on Schoolhill in the city centre, is “perfect.”

He continued: “You can literally go anywhere from here in less than 10 mins walking, lots of shops and shopping centres and only a few mins away from Union Street, very easy to get around with public transportation."
Aberdeen Live shared the good news on Facebook and over 350 readers shared their views on our channel. Opinions were mixed, with many expressing their admiration for their beloved city, while others believe the area has “gone downhill” in recent years.

One reader highlighted the vast range of cultural venues on offer, as well as boosting hundreds of miles of rolling countryside on our doorstep, saying: “Aberdeen has an amazing art gallery, theatre, Music Hall, P&J Live, Library etc with great hinterland- Deeside, Donside, Mountains including Munros on our doorstep.
“Coastline with clean beaches. We can’t possibly have large well-stocked stores if we buy everything online!”
Some who moved away will always consider Aberdeen as home. Someone said: “It is always nice to come home if coming up from the south and you hit the top o Kincorth ye canna get any better than the sight before yi. At night when dark and it's all lit up it's a bonny sicht.”
Another agreed, while urging the council to ‘get their finger out’ and improve our city centre. They said: “As much as I've moved away, my heart will always have a place for Aberdeen. But I must say, A.C.C get your finger out and get Union Street thriving again. It's got so much potential and thanks to your idiotic ideas, it's turning into a ghost town.”
Several others commented on the “decline” of Union Street. One reader said: “Sadly I've seen a big decline in Aberdeen these past 4 decades. Too many shops have shut down in Union Street, we've missed opportunities to improve Union Terrace Gardens.
“Stones at the Castle Gate are wobbly, [the monument] needs a good clean… Our city is a blinking mess, no one on the Council with ideas on how to revive our City.”
This single sentence stood out to us: “We live in a wonderful city far from perfect but it's ours.”
